Methodology

How we research where to eat and drink.

Our Editorial Philosophy

The right place depends on the meal, the budget and who you are with. We shortlist places using cited sources, then explain what each is good for.

How We Choose Places

Suggestions consider these criteria and explain their limits:

  1. 1

    Meal fit

Match the place to the meal the guide covers: a pub lunch, a Sunday roast, a quick chippy tea or a booked dinner.

  2. 2

    Local character

Favour places with a documented history, a regional dish or a local brewery behind them.

  3. 3

    Practicalities

Note location, booking rules, price level and stated dietary options.

  4. 4

    Evidence

Cite factual claims and say when a detail is not published.

What We Don't Rank By

Understanding what we explicitly exclude matters for trust.

  • ✗Affiliate commission rates
  • ✗Paid placement
  • ✗Invented meals or visits
  • ✗Unverified awards

Where Our Data Comes From

Our guides draw on several kinds of source. We prioritise them in this order:

  1. 1. Venues and breweries

Official websites, menus, booking pages and opening hours

  2. 2. Tourism boards and guides

Visit-city sites, CAMRA and published food guides

  3. 3. Attributed reporting

Local press with an identifiable source and date

Handling Uncertainty

When a source doesn't confirm a detail, the guide says so and points you to the venue's page to check. We'd rather be clear about what is published than guess.
