York Pubs and Food Landmarks: A Day of Pints and Plates

York's pub and food stops sit close together but reward different moods. On Stonegate alone, two pubs share the Trembling Madness name, while the timber-framed Ye Olde Starre Inne hides down a narrow passage that visitors often walk past. The Blue Bell on Fossgate, by contrast, is a two-room Edwardian survivor with original panelling and a tiny side hatch, listed Grade II* and kept intact.

Some stops ask for a plan. York Gin runs tastings and a gin school on a 300-litre copper still, and booking is required, so a short evening there and a brief shop visit are not the same outing. York's Chocolate Story, at the top of the Shambles off King's Square, recommends booking ahead and arriving early for its guided hour indoors.

Others suit a spur-of-the-moment pint. Neither the Blue Bell nor the Trembling Madness houses need booking, though the Stonegate room is cramped and sharing a table is normal. Ye Olde Starre Inne recommends booking for its courtyard and three terraces, handy for families and dogs.

Brew York's registered base sits on Osbaldwick Industrial Estate, well east of the centre, so treat it as a brewery address rather than an automatic stop on a city-centre wander.

Where booking makes the difference

York Gin requires booking for its distillery tasting or gin school, a half-day commitment that shows off Yorkshire grain on a 300-litre copper still; the shop is a separate quick stop for bottles and engraved gifts. York's Chocolate Story recommends booking ahead and arriving early for its guided hour indoors, which leaves time for the shop and café. Ye Olde Starre Inne, meanwhile, recommends booking for its courtyard and three terraces.

Rainy pints and dry-day terraces

Every listed pub and tasting room is indoor, so a wet day costs little: the Blue Bell's snug rooms, the Stonegate ale house and the Lendal mansion all keep you dry. The Blue Bell takes 30-45 minutes. On a dry day, Ye Olde Starre Inne's courtyard and its three terraces are the place to linger, though its mixed setting means you can retreat behind the panelled bar if the weather turns.
